The Asia Cricket Council is reviewing the June 2021 Asian Cup window when it was announced on Thursday (July 9) that the tournament, which was expected to take place in September this year, has been postponed due to the Covid-19 conflict. The ACC has also announced that the Pakistan Cricket Board, which was to host the 2020 event, has changed its hosting rights with Sri Lanka Cricket, while the PCB will host the 2022 event.
The 2020 tournament was held in the United Arab Emirates, where Pakistan hosted the tournament. India was unwilling to travel to Pakistan but the BCCI had said it had no problem with Pakistan holding the Asian trophy, as long as it was in a neutral position.
During the ACC meeting in June, opportunities arose to host the tournament in Sri Lanka. However, recognizing the status of COVID-19 and in an overseas event, the ACC decided to play it safe.
The Asian Cup is played once every two years, and since 2016 has been a regular round - a meeting between T20Is and ODIs. The tournament has not been visited by Pakistan since 2008. Sri Lanka hosted the 2010 program among the next three programs in Bangladesh. The final Asian Cup tournament takes place in the UAE.
